Maintaining Your Basketball Equipment

While Goalrilla does provide a Lifetime warranty on most of their products, it is still advisable to maintain your basketball equipment properly. The easiest way to keep your hoop in tip-top shape is to prevent any damage from ever occurring.

REPAIRING CHIPS IN YOUR HOOP’S FINISH

We get it, it happens. The neighbor’s kid runs his scooter into the base and takes off some of the powder coat finish. You accidentally ding up the post bringing in materials for a weekend project, or your spouse miscalculates how much space he or she needs to get the car out – accidents happens.

Luckily, the strength and integrity of your goal remains unharmed. As for the finish? You may need to make a few simple repairs to ensure your hoop outlasts everything thrown at it.

HOW TO REPAIR SCRATCHES, DINGS, CHIPS, AND OTHER DAMAGE TO YOUR HOOP

Wherever the damage is, the first thing you’ll want to do is prepare the surface by sanding it down. Goalrilla recommends using a 180 to 200 grit sandpaper and sanding an inch or two around the affected area. Ensure no rust or loose paint remains.

Once the surface has been evenly sanded down, clean the area with some soapy water and immediately dry.

Since the galvanized steel is exposed, it should be primed with a water-based primer. Our recommendation is the BullsEye 123 Water-Based Primer, which is available at most home improvement stores. Priming is important here as it helps to prevent rust, creates an even finish, and helps the final coat of enamel paint adhere to the steel’s slick surface.

Use a high-performance enamel spray paint to apply the final coats. You may want to apply several coats depending on the area damaged. Follow the instructions on the spray paint can and allow the appropriate time for the paint to dry between coats.

You can find the appropriate spray paint at your local home improvement store. A paint such as Rust-Oleum’s Professional High-Performance Enamel Spray paint would be an ideal choice for this repair.

PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE

Rust is the enemy. It’s something you don’t want to see on your Goalrilla or anything else for that matter. Rusting is a kind of corrosion that ultimately weakens the strength of your hoop and happens when there isn’t any protection on the steel pole.

Naturally, this occurs when the powder coat finish isn’t present or has been worn down, for example, in the case of it getting scraped by a car, scooter, or other object.

Periodically check for any damage every couple of months. If any part of the powder coating has been chipped away, repair it as soon possible.

ACCESSORIES

If your hoop did not include one, it’s highly recommended to purchase a pole pad. A thick pole pad will protect not only the goal, but objects and people that could potentially collide with it.

If you purchased a Yard Guard or Solar LED Hoop Light, be sure you follow all the instructions for proper installation. During installation, here’s an additional trick you may want to use to make maintenance and care easier in the future.

For any nuts or bolts used, applying a small amount of anti-seize to the threads before tightening will make them substantially easier to remove in the future. If you live in an area where the climate is often humid or receives a large annual rain fall, this can make a huge difference in future maintenance.

You might be thinking to yourself, “Why would I need to remove anything?” Although the installation of your goal is a relatively permanent installation, you may need to transport your hoop to a new residence, which will require disassembly of some parts.

Secondly, during severe weather, some Goalrilla owners may find it more beneficial to bring their hoop light into a covered area to protect it from flying debris, hail, or other extreme weather.

Your Goalrilla basketball goal is the toughest basketball hoop on the planet, so you can rest assured it’ll stand tall in even the harshest conditions.
